Trelew,

        a town with history

Trelew is a city with lot of history. Mimosa was the first ship to come to Patagonia around 1865, with the first group of people, but that was the beginning. In 1886, Vesta arrived and with it the need of building, around the railway station, houses for the workers. As a result, Trelew was born. The name was given to  Lewis Jones, the pioneer of the welsh colony and a tenacious fighter for the building of the railway. “Lew” is the short for Lewis and “Tre” in welsh means “Pueblo”, what  began being “Punta de Rieles” is now “El Pueblo de Luis”.

The first group of houses built were called  “ Casas de Piedra”. By 1889 there were 36 houses and 1885 the first business was settled, Chubut Mercantile Company. From 1895 the number of inhabitants has been increasing from 132 to 70.000 today.

As the little town was growing larger and larger, people began to work to have a town hall.  By March 1904 the people was called to choose the first authorities.
